Animal Feed, Vitamin, & Speacialty Mineral Processors
Feed mixers, like the PHLAUER™ Dual Shaft Mixer for horse, race horse, dairy feeds and vitamin/mineral blends, are used by more companies every day. They deliver the highest quality at the lowest cost per ton with predictable, repeatable, and reliable performance.
Feed mixers achieve consistent Cv. 5% results from small samples, ensuring even the smallest ingredients are represented. Accurate liquid coatings as low as 0.6% on pressurized pellets are possible, and extruded kibble can also be coated thanks to the no-shear rotor design.
PHLAUER™ mixers can also be lined with UHMW for easier cleaning when using molasses. A&J Mixing has developed expertise in managing UHMW expansion with floating linings and expansion joints, ensuring durability in double rotor applications.

Mixer Details
Horse & Dairy Feed Mixers use low-speed dual rotors that mix dry ingredients in 30 seconds. High liquid coatings (>5%) can be applied quickly through slug loading, coating all surfaces in less than a minute. With lower coatings, spraying and after-mixing may take up to 2 minutes.
To reduce maintenance, A&J offers options such as AR400 paddles, AR400 housing sides and discharges, and UHMW liners (unique to PHLAUER™ dual shaft mixers). Stainless versions are also available.
Best practices include weighing fats and oils to control costs and improve accuracy. Applying by time or volume creates variance, while weighing ensures ROI.
Typical Applications
- Horse feed
- Dairy feed
- Race horse feed

Vitamin & Mineral Processors
Recent ingredient trends and complex recipes have made mixing more difficult, especially achieving end-to-end transportation. Dual rotor mixers solve these challenges.
A&J has rebuilt paddle/ribbon mixers that failed Cv. requirements, replacing them with dual shaft AR400 machines (some with Shearmakers). For recipes prone to lumps (e.g., salt and iron oxide), shearing for 2–3 minutes can drastically improve product quality.
Other considerations include hopper geometry for proper flow, wear resistance options, and stainless steel durability. Alternatives include UHMW liners, SO17400 HT900 alloy, or Teflon coatings.
